Historical Place
Batsto Village is a nationally recognized historic site located within Wharton State Forest in Washington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.
Founded in 1766 as an ironworks community, it thrived due to abundant natural resources like bog ore, water, and forests for charcoal, producing iron goods including supplies for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The village transitioned to glassmaking in the mid-1800s before declining and was later purchased by industrialist Joseph Wharton in 1876, who developed it into a family vacation estate and farmland.
Today, Batsto Village preserves 33 historic buildings including the Batsto Mansion, gristmill, general store, and church, showcasing life in the late 1800s with museum exhibits, educational programs, and walking trails amid the scenic Pine Barrens. It is listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places and serves as a cultural and natural heritage site for visitors.
