Museum

The Adams House in Deadwood, South Dakota, is a beautifully preserved Queen Anne-style home built in 1892 by pioneers Harris and Anna Franklin.

Known for its elegant oak interiors, hand-painted canvas wall coverings, stained-glass windows, and modern 19th-century amenities like indoor plumbing, electricity, and a telephone system, it epitomized luxury in a former rough mining town. Later owned by William E. Adams, a prominent Deadwood businessman and mayor, the house remained largely untouched for many years after his death in 1934, preserving original furnishings, sheet music on the piano, books, china, and even cookies in a jar.

The house was purchased and restored by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission in the 1990s and opened as a museum in 2000, offering guided tours that vividly portray the affluent lifestyle and history of two influential Deadwood families. The mansion stands as a testament to the city’s transition from a rough frontier camp to a prosperous and culturally rich community.
