Museum
The Aktá Lakota Museum and Cultural Center in Chamberlain, South Dakota, opened in 1991 as part of St. Joseph’s Indian School to honor and preserve the rich culture of the Lakota people.
The name "Aktá Lakota" means “to honor the people” in the Lakota language. The museum offers visitors a living lesson on the Native American way of life, showcasing the history, art, and traditions of the Northern Plains tribes, particularly the Lakota. The exhibit is structured around the four cardinal directions of the medicine wheel, each representing significant aspects of the Lakota experience: life before Euro-American contact, the arrival of settlers and missionaries, the broken promises and treaty losses, and the ongoing continuity and cultural preservation.
The museum houses a vast collection of historical artifacts, clothing, artwork, and contemporary pieces created by Native artists, providing a comprehensive look at both past and present Native American life. It also features a Medicine Wheel Garden that celebrates native plants and their healing significance. Admission is free, making it a welcoming educational resource dedicated to cultural preservation and public engagement.
