Historical Place
Alcatraz Island is a small rocky island in San Francisco Bay, California, most famous for its former use as a maximum-security federal prison between 1934 and 1963.
Originally charted by Spanish explorers in 1775 and known as "La Isla de los Alcatraces" or "Island of the Pelicans," the island served various roles through history, including military fortification, West Coast's first lighthouse, and a military prison beginning in the Civil War era.
Its remote location surrounded by cold, treacherous waters made it ideal for detaining notorious prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz". Despite being considered escape-proof, there were several escape attempts, the most famous being the 1962 breakout by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, whose fate remains a mystery. High maintenance costs led to its closure in 1963.
In the late 1960s, the island was occupied by Native American activists, and since 1973, it has operated as a popular tourist site and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, attracting over a million visitors each year. Today, Alcatraz is notable for its layered history, remarkable prison stories, and striking views of San Francisco.
