History Museum
Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage in Tennessee is a historic plantation and home located about 10 miles east of Nashville, serving as the former residence of the seventh U.S. president, Andrew Jackson.
Built in the Greek Revival style, the mansion was constructed in 1835 after a fire destroyed earlier structures, and it features period furnishings, Italian marble mantels, and delicate period details.
The estate originally spanned thousands of acres and operated as a cotton plantation with numerous enslaved workers, who were integral to its operation. Jackson purchased the property in 1804, adding to it over the years, and it became a symbol of his life, politics, and legacy. In the late 19th century, the property was preserved and became a museum when the state of Tennessee acquired it, opening to the public in 1889.
Today, it covers over 1,000 acres and includes more than 30 historic buildings, gardens, and walking trails, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Its museum preserves Jackson’s history, slave life, and the antebellum South, offering guided tours, a visitor center, and special events, making it one of the most significant historic sites in Tennessee.
