Opened in 1996 originally as Underwater World and rebranded in 2000, it is now a Smithsonian Affiliate and certified as a Green Business by the city of San Francisco. The aquarium features over 24,000 animals from more than 200 species, housed in 33 habitats with 300 feet of clear acrylic tunnels allowing visitors to walk beneath the water and observe sharks, rays, octopuses, and other native marine creatures.
Beyond exhibits, it promotes ocean conservation and climate action through education and research, hosting around 600,000 visitors annually who can engage with interactive displays and behind-the-scenes tours. The aquarium’s mission is to inspire conservation of the San Francisco Bay and its watershed, fostering a deeper connection to local marine ecosystems.
