Nature Preserve
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is an 805-acre haven in Sonoma County, California, just north of Guerneville, preserving old-growth coast redwoods in a temperate rainforest that receives about 55 inches of rain annually, mostly from fall through spring.
Established in the 1870s by logging baron Colonel James Armstrong and later protected as a state park in 1936—upgraded to natural reserve status in 1964—it features towering giants like the 310-foot Parson Jones Tree and the over 1,400-year-old Colonel Armstrong Tree amid ferns, Douglas-firs, and bay laurels.
Visitors park at the entrance for free and walk the accessible 1.5-mile ADA Pioneer Nature Trail loop to experience the dramatic forest canopy, with a visitor center, picnic areas, amphitheater, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding—no dogs on trails beyond the entrance—and a $10 vehicle fee.
