Tourist Attraction
Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, Alabama, is a unique 4-acre miniature park created by Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey.
Over nearly 50 years, from 1932 to 1961, Brother Joseph built 125 detailed miniature replicas of famous religious structures, historical landmarks, and biblical scenes using concrete, stone, and discarded materials like marbles, tiles, seashells, and costume jewelry. The park is located in a former quarry and features replicas ranging from St. Peter's Basilica to the Tower of Babel, along with scenes from the Holy Land.
Brother Joseph’s work is renowned for its creativity, detail, and use of recycled materials, creating a peaceful garden setting known as “Jerusalem in Miniature.” The site is both a tourist attraction and a recognized historic landmark, offering visitors a contemplative and artistic experience rooted in faith, history, and imagination.
