Fairhope, Alabama, was founded in November 1894 as a utopian single-tax colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association, a group inspired by economist Henry George’s Georgist philosophy.
The colony was established on the site of the former Alabama City along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, aiming to create a community free from private monopolies with equal opportunities for its members, using a system where land was publicly owned and leased to residents long-term.
This model sought to encourage productive land use while generating communal revenue through land rents instead of traditional taxes. Over the years, Fairhope evolved from a utopian experiment into a popular winter retreat for artists and intellectuals and later became an affluent suburb and boutique resort area.
The community retains its unique character through the ongoing operation of the Fairhope Single-Tax Corporation and remains known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the nearby Weeks Bay Nature Reserve.
