Tourist Attraction
The Ballard Locks, officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, are a set of two boat locks at the west end of Salmon Bay in Seattle, Washington, completed in 1917 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Named after Major Hiram M. Chittenden, the locks connect the freshwater Lake Washington and Lake Union to the saltwater Puget Sound, enabling boats to pass between the different water levels while preventing saltwater from contaminating the freshwater lakes. The construction of the locks lowered the water level of Lake Washington by approximately 8.8 feet, significantly altering local geography, opening new land for development, and ending the natural salmon runs in some rivers.
They are the busiest locks in the United States, handling around 50,000 vessels annually, and are key to Seattle's maritime economy. The site includes the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens and a visitor center, making it a popular attraction for over a million visitors yearly, blending engineering history with natural beauty.
