Museum
Belmont Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee, is a grand Italianate villa built between 1850 and 1860 by Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen and her husband Joseph Alexander Smith Acklen.
The mansion, with 36 rooms spread across nearly 20,000 square feet, was once the largest home in Tennessee prior to the Civil War and sits on an estate originally spanning about 175 acres. It featured lavish amenities including art galleries, a bowling alley, conservatories, ornate gardens, and even a private zoo.
Throughout the Civil War, the mansion served as Union General Thomas Wood's headquarters during the Battle of Nashville, surviving the conflict with little damage. After the war, the estate became a school and eventually part of Belmont University.
Today, it operates as a museum open for guided tours, showcasing original furnishings, artwork, and architecture that reflect Southern antebellum life, while also telling stories of the Acklen family and the enslaved people who worked the estate. The mansion is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and is celebrated for its rich history, elegant design, and cultural significance in Nashville.
