Big Four Bridge

Big Four Bridge, Kentucky, United States

Bridge

The Big Four Bridge is a six-span truss bridge originally built in 1895 to carry railroad traffic across the Ohio River, connecting Louisville, Kentucky, with Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Named after the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, known as the Big Four Railroad, it served as a vital freight and passenger rail link until rail service was discontinued in the late 1960s due to increasing locomotive size and weight. After sitting idle for decades, with its approach ramps removed, the bridge earned the nickname "Bridge That Goes Nowhere." Starting in the 1990s, plans to revitalize the bridge led to its conversion into a pedestrian and bicycle walkway, reopening in 2013.

Today, it is a popular urban attraction enjoying millions of visitors annually, featuring scenic views of the river and city, illuminated at night with colorful lighting, and providing a key recreational link between Louisville and Jeffersonville.
