The Birmingham Zoo, opened in 1955 and originally known as the Jimmy Morgan Zoo, is Alabama's largest zoological park and the only one in the state accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
It began as a small collection of animals in city parks and was formalized with community and city support, including key leadership from Mayor James R. Morgan and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Situated on 122 acres in Lane Park at the southern foot of Red Mountain, it initially featured exhibits such as Monkey Island, an elephant house, bear moat, birdhouse, snake pit, and seal pool.
Over the decades, the zoo expanded to house about 500 animals of 165 species, emphasizing conservation, education, and family-friendly experiences. Modern additions include immersive habitats like Trails of Africa and a children’s zoo.
The Birmingham Zoo continues to serve as a beloved local attraction, engaging visitors with both its animal collection and programs that promote wildlife conservation and environmental awareness.
