Boyne Mountain Resort in Northern Michigan near Boyne City was founded in 1947 when Everett Kircher purchased land for just $1 from a Michigan senator and began developing it into a ski resort.
The resort opened in 1949 with two ski runs, a warming hut, and the region’s first chairlift, which was purchased second-hand from Sun Valley, Idaho, and remains in use today with upgrades. Throughout the 1950s and beyond, Boyne Mountain expanded rapidly, adding a lodge, guest rooms, dining facilities, and pioneering snowmaking technology that extended the ski season.
