Tourist Attraction
Kitch-iti-kipi, located within Palms Book State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near Manistique, is the state’s largest natural freshwater spring, spanning about 200 feet across and 40 feet deep.
Known as "The Big Spring," it continuously releases over 10,000 gallons of crystal-clear, emerald-green water each minute from fissures in limestone bedrock beneath it, with water temperature consistently around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The spring was originally a hidden gem in dense wilderness until the 1920s when John I. Bellaire, a local store owner, discovered it and convinced the surrounding landowners to sell the area to the state for a token price to be preserved as a public park forever.
Native American legends surround Kitch-iti-kipi, adding cultural significance as many tribes considered it a sacred site. Today, visitors can explore the spring from a unique self-operated observation raft that allows close views of underwater tree trunks, rocks, and fish, making it a treasured attraction for both its natural beauty and historical importance.
