Brookfield Floating Bridge

Brookfield Floating Bridge, Vermont, United States

Bridge

The Brookfield Floating Bridge, also known as the Sunset Lake Floating Bridge, spans Vermont Route 65 across Sunset Lake in Brookfield, Vermont.

Originally constructed in 1820 after a resident tragically drowned crossing the ice, the bridge was built as a floating log bridge to provide a safer and more direct route across the lake. It has been rebuilt eight times since then, with each version improving on the design, including the use of kerosene barrels in the 19th century for flotation and, more recently, fiber-reinforced polymer pontoons in the current 2015 structure.

This single-lane bridge is approximately 318 feet long and carries both vehicular traffic and pedestrian sidewalks. It is one of a few floating bridges in the United States and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, symbolizing local ingenuity and community heritage while continuing to serve as a critical transportation link and scenic landmark.
