Brookside Gardens

Brookside Gardens, Maryland, United States

Botanical Garden

Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland, is a 54-acre public botanical garden that first opened to the public on July 13, 1969.

It was developed by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission on land formerly owned by Stadler Nursery. The original design by landscape architect Hans Hanses created distinct garden "rooms" showcasing plants suitable for the local climate, with an emphasis on inspiring home gardeners.

The gardens include a variety of formal and informal areas such as azalea walks, a wedding gazebo, a conservatory, and themed gardens like the Fragrance Garden, Rose Garden, Gude Garden with its Japanese Tea House, Trial Garden, and Aquatic Garden.

Over the years, the garden expanded with new features like a visitors center with a gift shop, horticultural library, classrooms, and an auditorium. Its mission is to provide a vibrant horticultural experience, promote plant appreciation, and serve as a tranquil and educational destination for visitors year-round.
