Route
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is a vehicle and passenger ferry that crosses the 17-mile Delaware Bay, connecting North Cape May, New Jersey, and Lewes, Delaware.
It began service officially on July 1, 1964, operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, providing one of only two year-round direct crossings between Delaware and New Jersey. Travelers use the ferry to avoid a long drive through southern New Jersey and Delaware, making it an important transportation link. The ferry carries passenger cars, buses, RVs, trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles, with each vessel able to transport up to 100 vehicles and 800 passengers.
The current fleet includes three vessels that replaced the original ones from the Chesapeake Bay area by the mid-1970s. The service was initially planned multiple times in the 20th century but came to fruition in the 1960s to boost tourism and regional connectivity.
Today, the ferry operates year-round with reservations accepted during busy periods and is also a popular tourist attraction, providing scenic views of Delaware Bay and access to nearby beaches and towns on both sides.
