Casino/Hotel
Castaways refers to two defunct casino-hotels in Nevada, USA, both long closed and demolished.
The original Castaways Hotel and Casino operated on the Las Vegas Strip from 1963 to 1987, evolving from the 1930s San Souci motel, featuring slots, table games, a showroom, and an aquarium bar; Howard Hughes bought it in 1967 for $3.3 million, before Steve Wynn demolished it for The Mirage.
A second Castaways, formerly Showboat on the Boulder Highway (opened 1954), rebranded in 2000-2004 with 445 rooms in a 19-story tower, a casino, bingo hall, and sports pavilion, before closing amid bankruptcy and imploding in 2006, with the site later redeveloped as apartments.
