Art Museum
The Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin, opened in 1970 originally as the Elvehjem Art Center to support the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s educational mission.
It was named after Conrad Elvehjem, a prominent biochemist and UW president. In 2005, following a major $20 million donation by alumni Simona and Jerome A. Chazen, the museum was renamed in their honor. The expansion, completed in 2011 and designed by the architectural firm Machado & Silvetti, doubled the museum's size and connected to the original building via a dramatic skybridge.
Today, the Chazen Museum houses over 24,000 artworks spanning diverse cultures, periods, and media, making it the second-largest art museum in Wisconsin. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and decorative arts, featuring notable segments like Chicago Imagism and Mexican Modernist prints.
The museum hosts rotating exhibitions, educational programs, and special installations, offering a rich and engaging cultural experience to a broad public audience freely or at low cost.
