Church
The Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, was founded in 1877 by freedmen and free people of color and originally named the Second Colored Baptist Church.
The congregation purchased a lot on Dexter Avenue near the Alabama State Capitol in 1879, building a brick church completed in 1889. It is historically significant as the church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. served as pastor from 1954 to 1960, during which time he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal event in the American civil rights movement.
The church served as a meeting place and organizing hub for civil rights leaders and the community. It was renamed in 1978 to honor Dr. King and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. The church, its parsonage turned museum, and its legacy continue to attract visitors worldwide interested in civil rights history, reflecting its enduring role in the struggle for racial equality.
