Elevated
Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia is a high-altitude plateau within the Monongahela National Forest known for its rugged, windswept landscape reminiscent of northern Canada.
Elevations range from about 2,600 feet to over 4,100 feet, with much of the plateau sitting near 4,000 feet, making it the highest plateau east of the Mississippi River. The terrain features stunted trees shaped by constant winds, expansive heath barrens, rocky outcrops, bogs, and grassy meadows formed by past logging and fires.
The area is recognized for its unique ecology, hosting plants and animals typical of much colder climates, such as red spruce forests, mountain laurel, blueberries, sphagnum moss bogs, and carnivorous sundew plants. Hiking trails run through the wilderness area, offering visitors stunning views and a sense of remoteness.
The site was heavily logged in the 1800s, leaving behind a landscape shaped by natural recovery and conservation efforts. Dolly Sods remains a popular destination for backpacking, camping, and appreciating a rare and fragile environment at a significant elevation in the Appalachian region.
