Racetrack
Dover Motor Speedway, also known as the "Monster Mile," is a one-mile concrete oval racetrack located in Dover, Delaware.
It was built in the late 1960s, opening in 1969 as Dover Downs International Speedway, originally combining horse racing and auto racing. The track quickly gained prominence in American motorsports, hosting NASCAR events since its first race, the Mason-Dixon 300, won by Richard Petty in July 1969.
The venue is known for its steep 24-degree banking in the turns and 9-degree banking on the straights, creating intense racing conditions. In 1995, the track surface was changed from asphalt to concrete, making it one of the few full concrete tracks in NASCAR. Ownership and naming have evolved over time, with the current owner being Speedway Motorsports as of 2021.
The speedway hosts major NASCAR Cup Series races, among other racing events, and is famous for challenging drivers and thrilling fans with its unique combination of speed and physical demands. It's one of the largest spectator venues in the mid-Atlantic region and an iconic part of auto racing history.
