Nature Reserve
Duke Farms in New Jersey is a sprawling 2,700-acre estate originally developed in the late 1800s by James Buchanan Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company and Duke University.
Inspired by the farms of his North Carolina childhood, Duke transformed the land beside the Raritan River, creating nine lakes, extensive woodlands, grasslands, stone walls, and droveways.
After his death in 1925, his daughter Doris Duke inherited the property and made it her primary residence, focusing on ecological and sustainable farming practices. She created the Duke Gardens, a unique botanical display in conservatories, opened to the public in 1964.
Following Doris Duke’s death in 1993, the estate was reorganized by the Doris Duke Foundation and reopened in 2012 as a modern environmental stewardship park, featuring walking and biking trails around lakes, native wildlife habitats, and conservation efforts including the removal of invasive species.
The estate also preserves scenic landscapes and historic elements, including the foundation of an unfinished mansion, making it a blend of natural beauty, history, and ecological education.
