Historical Landmark
Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site is a small Nevada historic landmark in the remote ghost‑town area of Elgin, about 20 miles south of Caliente in Lincoln County, that preserves a 1920s one‑room schoolhouse used by ranch families in the surrounding valley.
Built in 1922 by local rancher Rueben Bradshaw on land donated by his father James, the school taught grades one through eight for more than four decades until it closed in 1967, when students began being bused to nearby towns. The building later served as a private residence before being restored to its original appearance in 1998.
Then donated to Nevada State Parks and established as a state historic site in 2005, where it now operates as a period‑furnished classroom–museum with original desks, a teacher’s apartment, and displays that show what rural school life was like for children in early‑twentieth‑century eastern Nevada.
