Ellis Island

Ellis Island, New York, United States

Island

Ellis Island, located in Upper New York Bay near Manhattan, served as the United States' busiest immigration station from 1892 to 1954, processing over 12 million immigrants.

Originally a small island expanded through land reclamation, it was named after Samuel Ellis, an early owner. The island became the gateway for millions, especially those traveling in third-class steerage who underwent medical and legal inspections in the vast Great Hall before being allowed entry.

Although many passed through, around 1% were deported for medical or legal reasons, sometimes leading to families being separated, earning it nicknames like the "Island of Hope" for those accepted and "Island of Tears" for those detained or sent back. After a devastating fire in 1897 destroyed the original wooden buildings and immigration records, a new fireproof structure was built, which stands today as a museum dedicated to the immigrant experience.

Ellis Island remains an iconic symbol of hope, struggle, and the diverse heritage of America, attracting descendants of immigrants and visitors interested in its rich history. The site offers exhibits and preserved areas that recreate the immigrant processing experience and honor those who passed through.
