Bryant Park

Bryant Park, New York, United States

Park and Garden

Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, occupies 9.6 acres behind the New York Public Library's main branch between 40th and 42nd Streets, originally designated public land in 1686 by colonial governor Thomas Dongan, later serving as a potter's field until 1840, site of the Croton Distributing Reservoir from 1842, and renamed in 1884 for poet William Cullen Bryant.

It hosted the 1853 Crystal Palace exhibition that burned in 1858, Civil War drills and draft riots, declined amid elevated trains and crime in the 1970s known as "Needle Park," then underwent major 1990s restoration with a great lawn, promenades, London plane trees, iron fences, and library stacks underneath, transforming it into a vibrant "town square."

Today it buzzes year-round with free events like summer film screenings, holiday markets, ice skating rink, curling lanes, piano performances, pop-up shops, reading rooms, and the iconic Le Carrousel with 1908 hand-carved horses amid statues, gardens, and 270 trees, drawing millions for its central accessibility and lively atmosphere.
