Fort Clatsop

Fort Clatsop, Oregon, United States

Fortress

Fort Clatsop, a reconstructed 50-by-50-foot log stockade nestled in coastal forests near the Lewis and Clark River five miles southwest of Astoria, Oregon, served as the winter encampment for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's Corps of Discovery from December 7, 1805, to March 23, 1806, after reaching the Pacific amid relentless rain, where the 33 explorers—including Sacagawea and York—hunted elk, made salt from seawater, traded with Clatsop and Chinook tribes, and documented journals, maps, and specimens.

Built on a Clatsop-recommended site with two rows of cabins around a parade ground and a freshwater spring, the fort marked the first U.S. military post west of the Rockies and the expedition's democratic vote—including women and enslaved York—to stay south of the Columbia for game and shelter, before departing east on their return trek.

Now part of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park managed by the National Park Service with a 2006 replica replacing the 1955 original lost to fire, visitors explore the site, canoe landing, trails, and exhibits on the Corps' endurance in this preserved slice of expedition history open daily except Christmas.
