Historical Landmark
Fort Gaines, located on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama, is a historic brick fortification built in the mid-19th century to guard the entrance to Mobile Bay.
Named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812, the fort was completed by Confederate forces in 1862 and became a key stronghold during the American Civil War. It is best known for its role in the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, where Union Admiral David Farragut famously commanded, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”
The fort’s massive walls, tunnels, and bastions were constructed following advanced French military designs of the era, and it housed a large artillery battery to defend the coast. Over time, Fort Gaines also played roles in the Spanish-American War and both World Wars before being decommissioned.
Today, it remains one of the best-preserved masonry forts in the United States, featuring original cannons, operational blacksmith and kitchen exhibits, a museum, and scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico. Managed by the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board, it hosts living history events and annual commemorations, though it now faces threats from shoreline erosion that endanger its structure and historical legacy.
