Fort Leaton State Historic Site, Texas, United States

Historical Landmark

Fort Leaton State Historic Site is a 23.5‑acre Texas State Historic Site near Presidio in far West Texas, about five miles southeast of town along Farm Road 170, where a large adobe fort sits on a bluff overlooking the Rio Grande and the historic Chihuahua Trail.

Originally built in the early 1800s as a private residence and later expanded in 1848 by Anglo settler Ben Leaton, the 40‑room adobe compound served as his home, a busy trading post, and a private fort for travelers, traders, and military parties moving between Texas and Mexico.

The site was long used informally as a local defense outpost and even as the first seat of unorganized Presidio County, but fell into ruin and changed hands many times before being donated to the state and restored; it now appears on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public as a museum‑style historic site that helps visitors picture frontier life along the Rio Grande in the mid‑1800s.
