Park
Barton Warnock Visitor Center is a 99.9‑acre Texas state park facility located about a mile east of Lajitas on FM 170 in Brewster County, serving as the eastern entrance to Big Bend Ranch State Park along the Rio Grande.
The center occupies a striking adobe building originally built in 1982 as the Lajitas Desert Museum Gardens and was later acquired by Texas Parks and Wildlife, which renamed it in honor of Barton Holland Warnock, a prominent botanist of the Trans‑Pecos and northern Chihuahuan Desert.
The visitor center offers interpretive exhibits on the region’s natural history, archaeology, and culture, including the “Una Tierra – One Land / One Land – Many Spirits” display, a small store for maps and souvenirs, and permits for camping, backpacking, and river use. Outside, a two‑acre desert garden showcases native Chihuahuan‑Desert plants, and the site also provides RV and drive‑up camping, making it both an information hub and a first stop for exploring the rugged backcountry of Big Bend Ranch.
