Historical Landmark
Fort Morgan State Historic Site in Alabama is a large pentagonal masonry fort built between 1819 and 1834 to guard the entrance to Mobile Bay. Named after Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan, the fort replaced the earlier Fort Bowyer and played key defensive roles in multiple conflicts including the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and both World Wars.
It is most famous for its role in the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, where Union Admiral David Farragut led his fleet past the fort’s artillery for a decisive victory, famously saying, "Damn the torpedoes!" The fort’s design enabled concentrated artillery fire to protect the bay’s main shipping channel, and extensive land defenses helped it withstand sieges.
Despite advances in military technology reducing its strategic importance over time, Fort Morgan was actively used until after World War II and is now operated as a living history museum with preserved structures and exhibits commemorating its military past.
The site is also an important bird habitat and popular destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
