Historical Place
Fort Popham State Historic Site in Phippsburg, Maine, is a Civil War-era coastal defense fortification built beginning in 1862 to protect Maine’s capital, Augusta, and nearby shipyards from potential Confederate naval attacks.
Although its construction ended in 1869, the fort was never fully completed. The crescent-shaped fort, made almost entirely of granite, spans nearly 500 feet and features 30-foot-high walls built using granite from nearby islands. Before Fort Popham, there was a smaller fortification at the site during the American Revolution that saw action in the War of 1812, and a battery built in 1808 as part of the coastal defenses enforcing the Embargo Act.
Fort Popham was rendered obsolete in 1905 with the construction of Fort Baldwin nearby, which had longer-range guns. The site is now preserved as a historic park, offering visitors a chance to explore its architecture and learn about its military significance while enjoying scenic views where the Kennebec River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, standing as a symbol of Maine’s coastal defense history.
