State Park
Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect, Maine, is a massive granite coastal fortification built between 1844 and 1869 to protect the Penobscot River Valley from potential British naval attacks.
Named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War, it is the first and largest granite fort in Maine and remains one of the best-preserved examples of mid-19th century military architecture. Though it never saw battle, the fort was active during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
Its design includes massive granite walls, underground passageways, and hot shot furnaces once used to heat cannonballs to set enemy ships on fire. Adjacent to the fort is the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, the tallest bridge observatory in the Western Hemisphere, standing 420 feet tall and accessible by elevator, offering panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and surrounding areas.
The site spans over 144 acres featuring interpretive tours, a visitor center with exhibits, and hosts special events throughout the year, making it a key historic and recreational destination in Maine.
