This 39-room Jacobean Revival mansion sits on a 12-acre estate along the shore of Lake Superior and features remarkable craftsmanship, including intricate woodwork, stained glass, and hand-carved details. Designed by architect Clarence H. Johnston Sr., with formal gardens by Charles Wellford Leavitt, the mansion includes functional innovations for its time like a central vacuum system and intercoms.
The Congdon family lived at Glensheen for about 70 years before donating it to the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1978, which opened it as a historic house museum in 1979. The mansion remains one of Minnesota’s most admired historic sites, well-preserved and offering visitors a glimpse into early 20th-century wealth, design, and regional history. It is also known for the tragic 1977 double murder of Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse, adding a compelling layer to its story.
