Nature Preserve
Government Canyon State Natural Area preserves 13,067 acres of rugged Texas Hill Country hills and canyons in northwest Bexar County, Texas, about 20 miles from downtown San Antonio off Galm Road, opened to the public in 2005 after land purchases began in 1993 to protect the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. Named for a 1850s military supply route called the "government road" through the canyon, it features over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails with 500 feet of elevation change, dinosaur footprints (the only known ones on public land in Bexar County), an 1880s historic house and barn, and diverse wildlife like golden-cheeked warblers, bobcats, deer, javelina, and plants such as live oak, Ashe juniper, and mountain laurel. Open Fridays through Mondays, visitors enjoy guided hikes, geocaching, picnicking, trail running, birdwatching, ranger programs, a playscape, and primitive walk-in camping on select nights, emphasizing environmental protection over heavy recreation.
