Historical Place
Grave Creek Mound Historical Site in Moundsville, West Virginia, is an ancient burial mound constructed by the Adena culture around 250 to 150 BC.
It stands about 69 feet tall and is roughly 295 feet in diameter at the base, making it one of the largest surviving earthworks of its kind in the United States. The mound was built in successive stages and originally surrounded by a ditch and causeway.
It was first excavated in 1838 by local amateurs who uncovered two burial vaults containing human remains and artifacts such as bone and shell beads and copper bracelets, suggesting these were burial offerings or items for use in the afterlife. The site has significant cultural and archaeological value, reflecting the complex society that built it and their burial practices.
Over the years, the mound has been protected and preserved; it was purchased by the state in 1909 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.Today, it features a museum that displays important artifacts and educates visitors about the indigenous peoples who lived in the region for thousands of years before European settlement. Visitors are encouraged to respect the site as sacred to Native Americans and to appreciate its place in pre-Columbian history.
