The Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia, established in 1954 by the National Science Foundation, is the United States' first national astronomy observatory and the first national laboratory open to scientists globally.
Unlike optical observatories that use visible light, it uses large radio telescopes to detect and study radio waves from space, allowing unique observations of the universe. The site is home to the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope.
