Historical Place Museum
Hamilton House, located in South Berwick, Maine, is a well-preserved late Georgian style mansion built between 1787 and 1788 by Jonathan Hamilton, a merchant from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The house is recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural quality and historical significance. It sits on about 50 acres overlooking the Salmon Falls River and features formal gardens and a wildlife sanctuary. The interior is decorated with traditional furnishings and Neoclassical wallpaper, reflecting the tastes of the era.
The house was carefully restored and preserved thanks to efforts led by the author and preservationist Sarah Orne Jewett, along with the support of local patrons. Today, Hamilton House operates as a historic house museum owned by Historic New England, offering visitors guided tours that provide insights into 18th-century New England life, maritime trade heritage, and the home's connection to the local community.
The site is notable for its scenic river views and tranquil gardens, making it a charming destination for both history enthusiasts and visitors seeking a peaceful cultural retreat.
