Tourist Attraction
Heceta Head Lighthouse, perched 205 feet above the Pacific Ocean on a dramatic basalt bluff 13 miles north of Florence in Oregon's Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, was constructed between 1892 and 1894 with bricks from San Francisco, stones from the Clackamas River, and a massive first-order Fresnel lens from England's Chance Brothers, first lit on March 30, 1894, to fill a 90-mile coastal lighting gap with its powerful beam visible 21 miles out to sea.
Named for Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta who surveyed the area in 1775, the 56-foot tower served three keepers and families in isolated Queen Anne-style homes with gardens, a school, and post office until automation in 1963 and electrification in the 1930s ended full-time residency, while Highway 101's arrival diminished remoteness.
Now a National Register site managed by Oregon State Parks with interpretive exhibits in the former assistant keeper's house turned B&B, visitors enjoy ranger-led tower climbs when open, tide pools, trails, whale watching, and stunning vistas in this storied beacon of maritime history.
