Historic Columbia River Highway

Historic Columbia River Highway, Oregon, United States

Route

The Historic Columbia River Highway in Oregon is a pioneering scenic highway built between 1913 and 1922 through the Columbia River Gorge, stretching about 75 miles from Troutdale to The Dalles.

Designed by entrepreneur Sam Hill and engineer Samuel C. Lancaster, it was the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, inspired by the great scenic roads of Europe. The highway was built to showcase and complement the natural beauty of the Gorge with engineered features like stone bridges, tunnels with windows, retaining walls, and carefully graded curves that highlight waterfalls, cliffs, and panoramic views.

Though replaced by Interstate 84 as the main route by the 1950s, much of the original road remains accessible by car, bike, or foot as the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. It is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a National Civil Engineering Landmark, admired both for its innovative engineering and its harmonious integration with the stunning landscape.

The highway not only serves as a historic transportation route but also as a celebrated destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
