Casino
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia opened originally as Jefferson County Races in 1933, making it the state's first horse racing track following legalized pari-mutuel wagering.
It quickly became known as America’s first winter race meet, drawing large crowds despite cold weather, aided by train service from Baltimore. Over the decades, the venue hosted notable figures such as John F. Kennedy and J. Edgar Hoover, and saw historic moments like Barbara Jo Rubin becoming the first female jockey to win a pari-mutuel race in the U.S.
The track struggled in the 1990s but revived significantly after 1997 when Penn National Gaming purchased it and invested heavily in upgrades including slot machines, dining, a hotel, and a live entertainment venue. It was renamed Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in 2010 when table games were added, and it became West Virginia's first casino to offer sports betting in 2018.
The property now includes over 3,500 slot machines, numerous table games, and a prominent live thoroughbred racing schedule, serving as a major regional entertainment and gaming destination.
