Museum
The Indiana Medical History Museum in Indianapolis is housed in the Old Pathology Building, the oldest surviving free-standing pathology facility in the United States and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Opened in 1896 on the grounds of the former Central State Hospital for the Insane, the museum preserves the original amphitheater, autopsy room, anatomical museum, library, and research laboratories that supported pioneering studies in psychiatric medicine and the physical causes of mental illness. Guests can explore exhibits featuring preserved medical specimens—primarily brains used for teaching—as well as displays on healthcare history, a recreated 1950s doctor’s office, and a medicinal plant garden.
Through guided tours and special events, the museum highlights the evolution of scientific psychiatry, medical education, and mental health care in Indiana, while preserving more than 15,000 artifacts related to the state’s medical heritage and the history of Central State Hospital.
