Botanical Garden
The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio, Texas, is a beautiful botanical garden developed in a former limestone rock quarry, transforming the rugged terrain into a peaceful, scenic space featuring winding stone pathways, a large pond filled with koi fish, a waterfall, and lush plantings including azaleas and camellias.
The garden was conceived in 1916 by a San Antonio parks commissioner who imagined turning the abandoned quarry into a Japanese-style garden, and it was shaped through the work of local prison inmates and the involvement of Japanese-American artist Kimi Eizo Jingu and his family. The Jingus helped create and maintain the garden, living on-site and operating a tea house that served visitors, until World War II when anti-Japanese sentiment led to their eviction and the garden’s temporary renaming as the Chinese Tea Garden.
In 1984, the garden was rededicated with its original name in a ceremony attended by Jingu family members and representatives of the Japanese government. Today, it is a vibrant cultural landmark recognized for its historical significance, artistic features such as a unique concrete torii gate by Dionicio Rodriguez, and serene natural beauty, making it a popular attraction in San Antonio’s Brackenridge Park.
