Mountain Peak
Kennesaw Mountain in Cobb County, Georgia, rises 1,808 feet above sea level as the highest point in metro Atlanta, a prominent monadnock between Marietta and Kennesaw formed by erosion-resistant quartz monzonite.
Originally home to mound builder cultures and later Creek and Cherokee peoples displaced during the 1830s gold rush and Trail of Tears, it became the site of the brutal Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864, where Union General Sherman's frontal assault against entrenched Confederate forces under General Johnston cost over 5,000 casualties during the Atlanta Campaign.
Part of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park since 1935, its summit offers panoramic views via a challenging 1-mile trail gaining 700 feet, cannons, and exhibits commemorating the Civil War amid 25 miles of hiking paths.
