Lake
Lake Chelan is a long, narrow lake in north-central Washington State, stretching about 50.5 miles through a deep glacier-carved valley resembling a fjord.
It is the third deepest lake in the United States, reaching depths of nearly 1,500 feet, with its bottom lying 388 feet below sea level at the deepest point. The lake's surface elevation is around 1,100 feet, maintained by the Lake Chelan Dam built in 1927, which also raised the lake level by 21 feet. Covering over 52 square miles with a watershed of approximately 924 square miles, the area around Lake Chelan is mostly forested with some agricultural use.
The lake experiences a semi-arid climate with low precipitation, and it supports diverse recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and wine tasting, surrounded by orchards, vineyards, and rugged mountain scenery, including glacier-capped peaks in the nearby North Cascades National Park.
