Historical Landmark
The LaLaurie Mansion, located at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans, is infamous for its dark history tied to Madame Delphine LaLaurie, a wealthy socialite known for her brutal treatment of enslaved people in the early 19th century.
The mansion gained notoriety after an 1834 fire reportedly started by an enslaved woman trapped to a stove exposed horrific conditions upstairs, where several slaves were found starved, tortured, and chained, leading to public outrage and the mansion being ransacked and burned by a mob. Madame LaLaurie and her family fled New Orleans, and the house remained in ruins for years before being rebuilt in 1838 by Pierre Trastour in the Empire style it largely retains today.
Over the years, the mansion has served various functions including a school, apartments, and businesses, but it remains a significant historical landmark, attracting attention for its association with one of New Orleans’ most notorious figures and its reputation as one of the city's most haunted sites.
