Building
The Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, completed in 1932, is a striking 34-story Art Deco skyscraper standing 450 feet tall, making it the tallest state capitol building in the United States.
It was designed by the architects Weiss, Dreyfous, and Seiferth and was a vision of Governor Huey P. Long, who pushed for its construction to replace the older Gothic Revival-style capitol. The building features 249,000 square feet of space with legislative chambers, the governor's office, and numerous government offices, all set on 27 acres of landscaped grounds.
Unlike most capitol buildings, it lacks a dome and instead rises as a tower with clean lines and decorative art deco motifs. The capitol is a symbol of Louisiana’s political history and architectural heritage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
Its design reflects the bold modernism of the early 20th century and the political ambition of Huey Long, with historical exhibits and visitors' access to an observation deck overlooking Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River.
