Lucy the Elephant

Lucy the Elephant, New Jersey, United States

Historical Landmark

Lucy the Elephant in Margate City, New Jersey, is a six-story, 60-foot-tall wooden and tin-clad structure shaped like an elephant, built in 1881-1882 by real estate developer James V. Lafferty as a publicity stunt to attract buyers to the then-South Atlantic City area.

Originally called Elephant Bazaar, it served as an observation point, tavern, residence, and tourist draw before falling into disrepair by the 1960s, when locals formed the Save Lucy Committee to raise funds, move her two blocks, and restore her, earning National Historic Landmark status in 1976.

Today, visitors climb a spiral staircase through her hind leg to explore her interior museum with historical exhibits and photos, then ascend to the howdah on her back for panoramic ocean and skyline views, celebrating her annual July 20 birthday with events.
