Mari Vineyards, located on Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City, was founded in 1999 by Marty Lagina with a vision to produce estate wines from a unique selection of Italian and classic varietals not typically grown in the region, including Nebbiolo and Sangiovese alongside Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Riesling.
The vineyard spans over 70 acres, with 60 acres planted with grapes and the remainder growing other fruits. Mari Vineyards uses innovative techniques such as the Nella Serra hoop house system to extend the growing season in Michigan’s cooler climate. Their flagship wine, Row 7, is a blend created from a hurried first planting and has become very popular.
The winery features a striking Tuscan-style building with architectural details made from reclaimed and local materials, including a long live-edge wood countertop. Visitors can enjoy tastings, cellar tours, and picturesque views of Grand Traverse Bay, experiencing a blend of traditional Italian influences and Michigan terroir in the wines and the winemaking approach.
